Monday – Gospels

Reading – Luke 2

Highlight Verse:

“Then he returned to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. And his mother stored all these things in her heart.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭2‬:‭51‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Notice something missing?

Matthew includes the visit of the Magi and the escape to Egypt.

Luke does not.

Some say that because the narrative is different in each of the gospels, none of them can be believed.

That would ignore the different perspectives and purposes of each Gospel.

If Luke were preparing a brief for the Roman court, he may have viewed the visit of the Magi and hiding from a Roman appointed governor as offensive to Rome and irrelevant to the narrative.

As a Gentile (non-Jew), Luke may not have known the prophetic significance of those to events either.

Even if he did know, he put down what the Holy Spirit prompted him to write.

Each of the Gospels have their own characteristics that compliment each other.

• Matthew gives the Hebrew perspective in great detail, emphasizing Jesus as the Messiah that the Jews had long awaited.

• Mark gives a concise account emphasizing Jesus’ ministry years and showing Him as the suffering Savior who speaks with great authority.

• Luke gives a view of the Gospel from a Gentile perspective, paying close attention to literal and temporal accuracy and making Him understandable to Gentiles.

• John emphasizes the divinity of Jesus from a close personal perspective, including events and teachings that were not covered by the other three gospels previously written.

Each are accurate while highlighting different events and teachings.

If you have read them all, which Gospel are you most drawn to and why?
If you haven’t read them all, which sounds like one you would like to study the closest?
