Wednesday – History

Reading – 2 Samuel 21-22

Highlight Verses:

“He sang: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. He is my refuge, my savior, the one who saves me from violence.”
‭‭2 Samuel‬ ‭22‬:‭2‬-‭3‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This Psalm of David is inserted here near the end of his life.

David looked back over his life and saw all the times God stepped in and protected him.

As a warrior king, those times were numerous.

And for that, David gave thanks.

I wouldn’t say I’m near the end of my life but I’ve lived long enough to be thankful for the Lord’s protection and provision.

There was the time at age 14 when I foolishly rode my bike from San Mateo to San Francisco and back, passing through dangerous neighborhoods, a protest at City Hall, and exposure to traffic.

Or the time a semi truck came around a curve in my lane on a narrow two lane highway in the mountains of North Carolina. I firmly believe God guided my little car right into that tiny space next to the guard rail as the truck flew past.

Or when my van’s engine blew up late at night on the Pennsylvania Turnpike as I was moving here to Colorado. God provided everything I needed to complete the move.

These are a tiny sampling of the times when God stepped in and protected and provided for me. I’m sure there were many more I never knew about.

For all of them, I am eternally thankful.

When in your history has God protected or provided for you far beyond normal?

Saturday – Open Topic

Reading – Psalm 51

Highlight Verse:

“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭51‬:‭10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The author of this song had messed up.

He stalked a beautiful lady.

It didn’t take long before he used his influence and position to bring her into his bed.

She got pregnant as a result.

To save his reputation, he did everything he could to cover it up, even to the point of having her husband killed and forcing her into marriage with him.

It wasn’t until an investigation brought the story to light that he repented.

Sound somewhat familiar today?

I’ve heard many say that Michael Tate’s (former lead singer for the News Boys) repentance wasn’t genuine since he waited until he was found out.

I won’t go into the details of his situation, mostly because I don’t know and don’t listen to the many crazy rumors going around.

Christian artists normally have a “purity clause” in their contracts that will end their careers if anything gets out that would harm their moral reputation.

That’s a good thing in that it holds them accountable for their message.

Unfortunately, it also drives them to cover up their failings, so they end up not getting the help and support that they need to get back on the right path.

That made me wonder if they should also have a “restoration clause” in their contracts that would kick in before the “purity clause.”

Ideally, that would lead them to seek help early and prevent irreparable damage to their message and their lives.

King David found restoration as seen here in this Psalm.

His repentance was genuine.

Despite the heinous nature of his sins, God restored him to a place where he became known as a “man after God’s own heart.”

There were consequences, but he got past them and back to a place of integrity.

I praying that Michael Tate would find that same kind of restoration.

Wednesday – History

Reading – 1 Chronicles 22-24

Highlight Verse:

“But you will have a son who will be a man of peace. I will give him peace with his enemies in all the surrounding lands. His name will be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel during his reign.”
‭‭1 Chronicles‬ ‭22‬:‭9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

One could question why David appointed Solomon to be the next king. He was far from the first born.

That question is settled when one realizes that it was God Himself who planned to make Solomon the King who would preside over a peaceful era of Israel.

Like David when he was anointed to be king, Solomon was far from the oldest or strongest, but He was the one that God had selected.

Unlike his father,

David cooperated with God right from the beginning by giving him a name that means peace.

He continued this cooperation by agreeing to make him the next king and teaching him what he needed to know.

Solomon became the great king of peace in part due to his God given wisdom,

but also because of the foundation that his father David set for him.

I have tried to set the foundations for success for my kids. They are still relatively young so the results are yet to be seen.

But I continue to pray for them, encourage them, and believe the best for them.

Reading – 1 Samuel 15-16

Highlight Verse:

““I am sorry that I ever made Saul king, for he has not been loyal to me and has refused to obey my command.” Samuel was so deeply moved when he heard this that he cried out to the Lord all night.”
‭‭1 Samuel‬ ‭15‬:‭11‬ ‭NLT‬‬

When was the last time you were so deeply moved that you cried out to the Lord all night?

The only events that pop into my mind are the loss of a loved one.

So here’s Samuel, who opposed the idea of Israel having a king, mourning the loss of God’s blessing on the king.

I believe that Samuel was mourning the loss of godly leadership in Israel.

Did God tell Samuel to get over it or remove Saul from kingship?

No, but God did answer Samuel’s prayers.

He had Samuel anoint the next king – the “man after God’s own heart” – David.

I don’t believe that was the answer Samuel expected.

Nor do I think that Samuel thought Saul would hang onto power for at least 11 more years (David became king at 30 and could not have been more than 19 at the time of anointing as he wasn’t yet of age to serve in the army).

But God answered Samuel’s prayers in the best possible way.
