Tuesday – Pentateuch

Reading – Leviticus 20-21

Highlight Verse:

““I will also turn against those who commit spiritual prostitution by putting their trust in mediums or in those who consult the spirits of the dead. I will cut them off from the community.”
‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭20‬:‭6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I have known quite a few people who were into “New Age” practices, even while they claim to be Christian.

The irony is that those same practices are actually some of the oldest and most evil practices of all time.

Consulting mediums and attempting to contact the souls of the departed (in reality contacting demons in disguise) was practiced right alongside the sacrifice of children to Molech and other pagan “gods”.

God detests such practices.

They lead people away from truth and into lies of the most evil kind.

Yes, it is true that God forgives all sin, even such as these.

But there are probably no other sins that lead people away from God and into death more rapidly than consulting the lies of the devil.

If you are dabbling in “new age” meditation that seeks to contact spirit guides, I challenge you to explore what the Bible says about it and pray for direction in the right way to go.

Friday – Prophets

Reading – Daniel 9-10

Highlight Verse:

“O Lord, we and our kings, princes, and ancestors are covered with shame because we have sinned against you.”
‭‭Daniel‬ ‭9‬:‭8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Daniel was as righteous as they come.

His faithfulness in the face of opposition puts my meager faith to shame.

But when it comes to pleading for mercy for his nation, he lumps himself right in with the worst sinners in Israel.

Was his self image really that low?

I don’t think so.

I believe he recognized that, if he was to plead for the nation, he had to identify with the nation.

He so closely identified with the nation of Israel that he took on the shame of Israel as he laid his nation’s soul bare before the Lord.

And God listened.

From the moment he started praying, he started the wheels in motion to restore the nation of Israel.

As people seeking to live righteous lives before God, it is easy to become judgmental of those who bring down the level of purity in our nation.

I daresay that is one of the reasons our nation is so sharply divided right now.

What would happen if we all humbled ourselves before God, confessing the sin of the nation as our own?

Restoration!

Thursday – Letters

Reading – Hebrews 13

Highlight Verses:

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas. Your strength comes from God’s grace, not from rules about food, which don’t help those who follow them.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭13‬:‭8‬-‭9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The denomination I spent most of my adult life in had Hebrews 13:8 posted in every church.

That’s a very good thing.

We should be reminded that the Gospel is unchanging, that Jesus is just as powerful today as 2000 years ago.

But it doesn’t stop there.

In context, the writer of Hebrews is countering a trend to follow a kosher diet to remain in good standing with God.

That was never part of the Gospel.

While that specific issue is not much of a current topic today, the concept remains the same.

Verse 8 goes hand in hand with verse 9.

Culture changes.

The Gospel does not.

While the way we perceive the Gospel may change, the Truth remains – Salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus alone.

No special rules.

Just acknowledge your sin, and trust in Jesus by accepting His sacrifice to pay for that sin.

If you think more is required for salvation, think again.

No special diet, no ceremonies, no priests, just faith.

Tuesday – Pentateuch

Reading – Leviticus 16-17

Highlight Verse:

“The other goat, the scapegoat chosen by lot to be sent away, will be kept alive, standing before the Lord. When it is sent away to Azazel in the wilderness, the people will be purified and made right with the Lord.”
‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭16‬:‭10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The scapegoat represented our sins being carried far away.

That’s something to be thankful for.

But have you ever acted like the scapegoat?

It is human nature to carry the guilty feelings from our sins around with us.

It can get so bad that we end up wandering around a spiritual wilderness.

Carrying that extra weight of guilt can even pull us back into those very same sins.

Let me make one thing very clear –

if you have trusted Jesus to take away your sins, they are gone!

You do not need to carry the guilt from them around with you, even if you have repeated those sins.

His death on the cross paid the penalty for all our sins past, present, and future.

As I’ve said before, sin is bad and we want to avoid it at all cost, but if we sin again, and we all will, we need to leave those sins on the cross and move on.

Be convicted to avoid those sins and, when appropriate, make compensation to those you’ve sinned against, but DO NOT wallow in guilt.

That only leads to more sin as it erodes your trust in Jesus and His sacrifice.

Are there sins for which you are still carrying guilt around?

Monday – Gospels

Reading – Luke 12

Highlight Verse:

“Anyone who speaks against the Son of Man can be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭12‬:‭10‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I remember reading this when I was young and wondering What if I made a joke about the Holy Spirit, or disregarded something that the Holy Spirit said? Would that be blasphemy?

If you have ever thought that, let me put your mind at ease. If you had truly blasphemed the Holy Spirit, you would know it.

Basically, it would mean that you had totally and consistently rejected Jesus.

Enduring Word put it as a “settled disposition of life that rejects the testament of the Holy Spirit regarding Jesus.” (Enduringword dot com)

So, yes, if you have completely rejected Jesus, you will not be forgiven.

Some would say that repeated sin is a rejection of Jesus.

I would say that repeated sin can lead to a rejection of salvation as the human psyche will tend to justify that sin to the point where you no longer see the need for forgiveness.

If Jesus asks us to forgive others 70 times 7 times (which represents infinity),

you can be sure that He will extend the same amount of forgiveness to us.

Make no mistake, repeated sin is harmful to the sinner. All sin is harmful. That’s why God calls it sin. He knows the best way for us to live and when we trust Him and follow that way, that is when we live our best life.

When we follow our own ways, we suffer.

When people fall far from the truth, that’s when they tend to reject Jesus.

And that is fatal.

Reading – Luke 10

Highlight Verses:

“These were his instructions to them: “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields. Now go, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭10‬:‭2‬-‭3‬ ‭NLT‬‬

It’s easy to think that the time when this was written was different. The harvest was great because it was that special time when Jesus split history in two and brought the new covenant to humankind.

It’s also easy to think that the harvest is limited today. In many ways our culture is at an all-time low.

If you think that, you may want to

take another look around.
- Younger generations are seeking God in increasing numbers
- In a reversal of most past trends, more young men are seeking God than young women.
- The Gospel is growing like never before in places where it has been forbidden like Iran.
- Christian music and film is gaining acceptance.
- Forest Frank, Brandon Lake and Jelly Roll have made it on Billboard’s top 100.
- The Chosen Series has seen huge streaming numbers.
- Numerous popular celebrities have accepted Jesus as Savior recently.
The list could go on.

The point is, the world is poised for a revival (or “awakening” to use the grammatically correct term) that could dwarf the Jesus Movement of the 1970’s.

I’ve included verse 3 in the highlight verses because Satan is ticked.

He will do what ever he can to stop the harvest.

Read on. Later in the chapter, Jesus saw Satan fall like lightning.

If you are seeing opposition when you try to share the Gospel, don’t fear. That opposition is just Satan popping his head up like a “Whack-a-Mole.”

Jesus is waiting to send that mole back where he came from.

If we are willing to be sent as workers, we will see a “harvest” beyond what we could imagine.

Thursday – Letters

Reading – Hebrews 9

Highlight Verses:

“And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment, so also Christ was offered once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭9‬:‭27‬-‭28‬ ‭NLT‬‬

It may be chilly here at my desk in our basement,

but this verse gave me chills when I read it.

Seriously. How many people go through life worrying about what God is going to say about all those sins they committed throughout their lives?

Listen to this:

Jesus already dealt with our sins!

We need to trust Him in that.

Of course, we should make every effort to stay away from sin. But we will mess up. We may even have to deal with the earthly consequences of our sins.

But if we accept the sacrifice Jesus made for us, they are dealt with.

With that Good News in mind, we eagerly await Christ’s return as He brings salvation to all who eagerly wait for Him.

Now that’s something worth waiting for.

On a theological side note – if you ever wondered about reincarnation, don’t bother. Verse 27 makes it quite clear that life is a one-time experience (that lasts for eternity).

Tuesday – Pentateuch

Reading – Leviticus 9-10

Highlight Verses:

“So fire blazed forth from the Lord’s presence and burned them up, and they died there before the Lord. Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord meant when he said, ‘I will display my holiness through those who come near me. I will display my glory before all the people.’” And Aaron was silent.”
‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭10‬:‭2‬-‭3‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Ouch!

I don’t know if I would be silent if I were Aaron. He just lost his two eldest sons.
- Here’s a couple of things to think about.
- The Bible does not say how old Nadab and Abihu were when this happened, but we know that Moses was more than 80 years old. Aaron was three years older. Chances are very good that Nadab and Abihu were at least middle aged.
- They were not that new at being priests. Granted, the tabernacle and the sacrificial system were fairly new, but they were counted among the 70 elders, and they were well trained in their duties.
- They knew better than to disrespect God by ignoring His instructions.
- Their actions could have led many thousands to go astray if God had not dealt with them.
Yes, their fate seems quite harsh.

While we don’t usually see that kind of punishment handed out these days, we know that God is still passionate about protecting His people from that which would lead them astray.

Those of us who have leadership roles should be extremely diligent to lead with integrity, devotion, and Biblical accuracy.

Saturday – Open Topic

Reading – Acts 20:13-38

Highlight Verse:

“But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.”
‭‭Acts of the Apostles‬ ‭20‬:‭24‬ ‭NLT‬‬

At first glance, you might feel pity for Paul.

He says his life is worth nothing if he doesn’t do the work God set out for him.

Then you realize that he did fulfill that assignment and then some.

Nearly every Christian today can trace their spiritual heritage to Paul.

He had a heavy responsibility, but he stepped into it and God supplied the ability and opportunities and the work of the Holy Spirit to fulfill it.

Not too many of us are called to spread the Gospel to the known civilized world.

Wait, that’s not quite true.

We are ALL called to spread the Gospel to the entire world.

We each have our part in that calling.

Some preach to the masses, some make friends and share the love of Jesus, some produce content to influence people toward Jesus, some support the work in various ways.

If you feel like your life is useless, let me assure you that, if you join in the calling to Spread the Gospel, there is great purpose in every breath you take.

Thursday – Letters

Reading – Hebrews 7

Highlight Verse:

“For the law never made anything perfect. But now we have confidence in a better hope, through which we draw near to God.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭7‬:‭19‬ ‭NLT‬‬

There are many ways that Jesus is so much better of a priest than the Old Testament priests.

This whole chapter is a nice logical discourse on that subject.

But this one verse sums it up nicely.

Basically, the law fell short of what Jesus did. Jesus made the perfect sacrifice, taking away our guilt so that we can be close to God.

That truly is the best hope and the deepest joy.

As we go through this season of Lent (which I completely forgot about yesterday, Ash Wednesday), let’s focus on that hope that was fulfilled on Easter Sunday 2000 years ago.

What is one way you can sharpen your daily focus on Jesus?
