Tuesday – Pentateuch
Reading – Deuteronomy 9-10
Highlight Verse:
““For the LORD your God is the God of gods and Lord of Lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed.”Deuteronomy 10:17 NLT
This book was written at a time when every locality had their own gods. The whole point was to appease these gods so they would do you favors.
In other words, religion was based on bribery.
But the Israelites worshipped the only true God.
The Creator.
He was never motivated by bribes or offerings.
His motivation was and is love for those He created.
Appeasing deities was so ingrained into the cultural psyche that they kept going back to idol worship, like with the golden calf.
That mentality is still around today.
We believe in one God now, but it is still our natural tendency to want to appease God with our actions in order to shift the balance into allowing us into heaven.
We strive toward the pearly gates not realizing that they are wide open to all who step out in faith to trust Jesus.
Doing good works and avoiding evil behavior is still a good thing.
But our motivation should be trust in God’s guidance and love for God that makes us want to please Him.
It’s not about earning our way to Heaven.
It is about trusting the God who made Heaven and Earth.
What is your favorite way to express your trust in God?
Are there areas where you are still trying to earn admittance to heaven?
