Reading – Nehemiah 3-4

Highlight Verse:

“Rephaiah son of Hur, the leader of half the district of Jerusalem, was next to them on the wall.”
‭‭Nehemiah‬ ‭3‬:‭9‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

You might start into reading this chapter and think, “great, another long list of names.”

Read it anyway.

You might be surprised what you find.

There were leaders, servants, and priests building the wall together. Some even came in from the surrounding areas to help.

While different groups worked on different sections of the wall,

nearly everyone worked.

It wasn’t easy work either.

If you have done any landscaping, you know that moving rocks can be hard work.

These people had to take the scattered stone from the destroyed wall and rebuild it strong enough to offer some protection from raiders.

The cool thing about this situation was – it worked!

Sometimes we can think of ourselves as above menial physical labor. We think it’s someone else’s job.

But sometimes the work at hand requires “all hands on deck.”

For example, we are part of a church that meets in a school. We have to set up and tear down chairs, the stage, sound equipment, kid’s classrooms, etc every week.

While some of that work requires technical skills, most of it is simple, only needing willing ness to help.

On most Sunday’s, it is amazing how many pitch in to make set-up and tear down quick and easy.

Our pastor and board members are often the hardest working on the crew.

As members of the Body of Christ, it is important for us to pitch in with full effort when we can.

As leaders, we take that a step further as we lead by example by serving.

What opportunities have you had to serve lately?
Are there areas where you should be stepping up to serve?
