Reading – John 6: 22-59

Highlight Verse:

“Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
‭‭John‬ ‭6‬:‭35‬ ‭NLT‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

One of the things I think about in the Fall is food.

Breads and soups, turkey and the fixings for Thanksgiving, and of course, pumpkin spice everything.

If I’m honest, I can dwell on food anytime of year whether it is soup and hot cocoa in the winter, Easter ham in the spring, or barbecue in the summer.

It was the rolls my wife was baking to go with dinner as I wrote this that brought this verse to mind.

Today, those rolls are just a side that makes dinner more enjoyable.

In Jesus day, bread sustained life.

  • Manna was a form of bread that sustained the Israelites in the wilderness.
  • A widow supported Elijah with bread made from her last flour and oil that God miraculously replenished.
  • Jesus fed the 5000 with bread and fishes.

He taught us to pray for our daily bread.

And at the beginning of His ministry, He proclaimed that man does not live on bread alone.

While God wants us to pray for our daily physical provision, our spiritual life is sustained by Jesus, the Bread of Life.

We need to come to Him everyday if we want to stay spiritually healthy.

There’s a popular song by Josiah Queen called Sundays that sums up what I want to say here so I’ll link it here.

Let’s listen together and seek that daily sustenance.

How do you sustain your spiritual life on a daily basis?
Is there anything we can do here to help with that?
